School with Indian kids named Britain’s best
London: A primary school in Britain where the majority of students are of Indian and Asian origin has achieved the best exam results in the country.
Newton Farm Nursery, Infant and Junior School in Harrow, north-west London, gained the highest average points score with 90 per cent of its year six pupils gaining a level five – one above the standard expected of the age group – in English and maths.
Average points scores are worked out for pupils in each school at various key stages, where points are allocated to each of a pupil’s test/exam results. These are then compared to the rest of the schools in England.
Rekha Bhakoo, the schools headteacher said high academic standards were down to children getting a ‘rigorous’ education with ‘rock solid foundations’.
She said: “I believe children need to be able to read and write and be proficient in English in order for them to live in the world and function and pass exams.
We believe learning should be irresistible.”
The school, which has banned detentions, attracted more than nine applications for each of its 30 reception class places in 2007.
