Subhash Khot wins the extremely prestigious Waterman Award and $500,000 in grant money.
The annual award recognizes an outstanding young researcher in any field of science or engineering supported by the National Science Foundation. In addition to a medal, the awardee receives a grant of $500,000 over a three-year period for scientific research or advanced study in the mathematical, physical, biological, engineering, social, or other sciences at the institution of the recipient’s choice.
Citation by CISE director Jeannette Wing: “Subhash is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at NYU and is recognized already by many other honors and awards. Subhash is a brilliant theoretical computer scientist and is most well known for his Unique Games Conjecture. He has made many unexpected and original contributions to computational complexity and his work draws connections between optimization, computer science, and mathematics. “
“Subhash Khot is a gifted and ambitious young scientist,” said NSF Director Arden L. Bement, Jr.
“He courageously tackles some of the most challenging computational problems, all the while advancing computer security, with vast consequences for the broader security of our personal identities, commercial interests, and societal institutions…even for national security as a whole.
An Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay graduate, Khot is an Associate Professor in the Computer Science Department at New York University, part of the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. He completed his PhD in Summer’03 at Princeton CS Department under the supervision of Prof. Sanjeev Arora . He stayed in Princeton for another year as a member of School of Mathematics. Khot was previously an assistant professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology (2004-07).
