Indian researchers at University of South Alabama find possible pancreatic cancer cure
Mobile, AL. Indian-American Researchers at the University of South Alabama are the first to demonstrate the effectiveness of an active ingredient in Magnolia officinalis/grandiflora on pancreatic cancer cells, according to a publication in the Public Library of Science (PLoS) on June 24, 2011.
Ajay Singh is the lead author of the publication. Bin Wang, Steven McClellan, Seema Singh, Sanjeev Srivastava, Arun Bhardwaj and Sumit Arora are among the publication authors.
Honokiol, a biologically active constituent of oriental medicinal herb Magnolia officinalis/grandiflora, on two pancreatic cancer cell lines, MiaPaCa and Panc1, alone and in combination with the most affective present standard chemotherapeutic drug, gemcitabine was examined.
Honokiol reduced pancreatic cancer cell growth and produced pancreatic cell death. The affect was apparent within 24 hours of dosing with a 70 to 80 percent pancreatic cancer death rate within 72 hours.
Pancreatic cancer is one of the most lethal malignancies in the United States with mortality rate increasing every coming year. According to American Cancer Society, about 43,140 Americans were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2010 and 36,800 died, marking this malignancy as the fourth leading cause of death from cancer. The life expectancy of pancreatic cancer patients is normally 8 months or less.
The next phase planned is pre-clinical trials with animals and then people.
Honokiol is one of two know polyphenolic compounds in Magnolia bark (Magnolia officinalis/grandiflora) that have been used in herbal medicine in China for treatment of several diseases.
