Indian American wins National Spelling Bee 2010
June 5, 2010 She spelt the word "stromuhr" correctly to win the popular Spelling Bee contest, becoming the third Indian-American in a row to emerge victorious in the coveted competition. 14-year-old eighth grader from Ohio Anamika Veeramani topped the 83rd Scripps National Spelling Bee on Friday, taking home more than $40,000 in cash and prizes. Anamika was the 10th Indian American to win the coveted Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Anamika's passions include reading, writing, photography and painting. She takes private lessons in Indian classical dance and golf. Anamika has been studying Indian classical music for eight years, and has played the violin for six years. She is a member of her school's orchestra, and she also enjoys swimming. Anamika is very interested in science and she has participated in science fairs at which her research projects have earned several awards. She aspires to become a cardiovascular surgeon, an author and a screenwriter. Anamika tied for fifth place in the 2009 Scripps National Spelling Bee. Ever since National Spelling Bee started in 1925, this year it welcomed 273 spellers— the greatest number of U.S.-based spellers in the history of the event.
