Celebrating Indian Culture: Holi at Birmingham Museum of Art

Celebrating Indian Culture: Holi at Birmingham Museum of Art

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – The Birmingham Museum of Art (BMA) and the Indian Cultural Society (ICS) colorfully welcomed the advent of spring by celebrating Holi at the Museum on March 9th.

Local turnout was tremendous with over 1,000 people in attendance. This is the third year of celebrating Holi at BMA for ICS.

Celebrated all over India since ancient times, Holi is a festival celebrating the arrival of spring.  Indians throw off the gloom of winter and rejoice in the colors and liveliness of spring by throwing colored powder (gulal) on each other.

Revelers at the event celebrated through Indian dance, music, storytelling, arts and crafts and food, along with scavenger hunts and henna tattoos.
