Four Indian-origin scientists inducted into American Academy of Arts and Sciences

American Academy of Arts and Sciences inducted 211 memebers on October 1 in the ceremony for the 231st class of members in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Among this year’s honorees in the U.S. are: Vishva Dixit of Genentech in South San Francisco; Shree K. Nayar of Columbia University in New York; and Amita Sehgal of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Named among the foreign honorary members is Raghunath A. Mashelkar of CSIR, India and president of the Global Research Alliance in Pretoria, South Africa.

Shree K. Nayar, Amita Sehgal and Vishva Dixit were among a total 212 new members selected to join one of the nation’s most prestigious honorary societies and a leading center for independent policy research. Members contribute to Academy studies of science and technology policy, global security, social policy and American institutions, the humanities, and education.

Vishva Dixit is the Vice President, Physiological Chemistry, Genentech, Inc., San Francisco, California.

Shree K Nayar, is T.C. Chang Professor, Computer Science and Co-Director of the Columbia Vision and Graphics Center at Columbia University.

Amita Sehgal is an investigator at Howard Hughes Medical Institute, John Herr Musser Professor and Vice Chair of Department of Neuroscience and Co-Director of Comprehensive Neuroscience Center at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

Raghunath (Ramesh) Mashelkar is a past president of the Indian National Science Academy, a member of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister and former director general of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, a chain of 38 publicly funded industrial research and development institutions in India.

These 211 new members earned election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences for extraordinary individual achievement and are among the world’s most influential artists, scientists, scholars, authors, and institutional leaders. In accepting membership into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, these individuals agreed to contribute their talents, experience and knowledge
