US opens helpline for Indian students affected by ‘sham university’ closure
Washington, Jan 29. The US authorities have established a helpline for the Indian students affected by the closure of Tri Valley University in California after an immigration scam, while asking some of them to wear radio trackers around their ankles as the case proceeds.
Some 1,555 students of Tri-Valley University, 95 percent of them from India, mostly Andhra Pradesh face the prospect of deportation following the closure of Tri Valley University in Pleasanton on charges of selling student visas.
"We have set up an email address and voicemail that Tri-Valley students can use to contact ICE Homeland Security Investigations directly with their questions," Lari K. Haley, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) spokesperson said.
Haley said any affected student can call the US number 415-844-5320 and leave a voice message. An ICE representative will return the call. Students can also write to 'SFRHSIFraud@dhs.gov', seeking help.

Indian-American Man Indicted for Tax Evasion
Vaibhav Dahake, an Indian-American businessman was indicted for conspiring to evade taxes. He allegedly did so by maintaining his assets in offshore banks in the British Virgin Islands and India between 2001 and 2010 without reporting them to the IRS.
The indictment that was returned in New Jersey said that employees of a bank based in England helped Dahake hide his assets. Although the identity of the bank was not revealed in the indictment, according to the Wall Street Journal, insiders say it is HSBC Holdings PLC. The indictment was worded, “This was one of the largest international banks in the world and was headquartered in England.”

US builds new partnership with India: Obama

US President Barack Obama on Tuesday said at the state of Union address that his administration has built a new partnership with India, as the US has stepped up efforts to ensure global peace and prosperity.
Obama visited India in November last year. Building new relationship with countries like India, Obama said is part of his efforts to shape a world that favors peace and prosperity.
"Around the globe, we are standing with those who take responsibility helping farmers grow more food; supporting doctors who care for the sick; and combating the corruption that can rot a society and rob people of opportunity," he said.

56 Indian Americans Are Intel Semifinalists
Houston, TX
There were at least 56 students of Indian American community nationwide among the 300 semifinalists in the Intel Science Talent Search, the nation’s most prestigious pre-college science and math competition. This year's semi-finalists were selected from 1,744 applicants representing 172 schools and are competing for USD 1.25 million in awards.
Each of them receive a USD 1,000 grant. The schools also get USD 1,000 for each semi-finalist named.
