New NIH Funding to Support UAB Total Joint Replacement Research Collaboration

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Newly announced National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding will expand the reach of ongoing University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) research into a unique nanostructured coating to improve the performance and longevity of total joint replacement components. The broadened UAB research opportunity is funded by a four-year, $790,931 National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant through the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS).

Dr. Manne to speak at a meeting of the President’s Cancer Panel
Upender Manne,Ph.D., an associate professor in the Department of of Pathology at University of Alabama at Birmingham has been invited to speak at a meeting of the President’s Cancer Panel on October 27, 2009 in Los Angeles, CA.
President’s Cancer Panel oversees the National Cancer Program (NCP). The chief responsiblity of the Panel is to monitor the development and execution of the NCP and to submit an annual report to the President with suggestions for improvments.
The Panel has invited Dr. Manne to share his research on effect of race on prognostic significance of polymorphisms linked to cancer.
UAB School of Engineering Signs Resource-Sharing Agreement With University in India
June 17, 2009 - BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
The UAB School of Engineering has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Institute of Technology Calicut (NITC) in Calicut, India. A signing ceremony was held in the administrative offices on the UAB campus Friday, June 12, and included UAB President Carol Garrison, Ph.D., and NITC Director Ginjala R. C. Reddy, Ph.D.
