I am Proud…

January 7, 2009

By Yash M. South Shades Crest Elementary School, Birmingham, AL

I am proud to be an American because anyone who at least 18 and a law abiding citizen can vote. Before, only men could vote. When America was divided into the thirteen colonies, only King James could vote. I am very thankful for the men who died trying to make our country a free place. I am proud to be an American because of the people in the military who died trying to protect us. Without all those people, America would have never been like it is today. We would still have to pray to whomever the king worshiped. Today we can worship whomever we want to worship and I’m very thankful for that. I am proud to be an American because we have great school systems and teachers like Ms. Crowley to teach us. Now we can all go to school wherever we want to go and get a job. I am very thankful for all of those who went to war and died trying to protect us. You should also be thankful.

Hamara Bharat (Our India)

August 4, 2009
By Smriti Krishnan
Grade 10, Spain Park High School, Birmingham, AL

August 14, 1947. The clock’s minute hand ticked closer to twelve. Finally, after more than two centuries of the British Raj, India was free! The date was August 15, 1947.

Jawaharlal Nehru, later to be India’s first prime minister, had predicted the moment in his famous speech entitled “Tryst with Destiny”. Nehru spoke, “At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance….. We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again.”

Along with Nehru, Mohandas K. Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore also spearheaded the Indian Independence movement.

Kavya Shivashankar is the national spelling bee champ

image
May 26, 2009. WASHINGTON - Cool and collected, Kavya Shivashankar wrote out every word on her palm and always ended with a smile. The 13-year-old Kansas girl saved the biggest smile for last, when she rattled off the letters to “Laodicean” to become the nation’s spelling champion.

The budding neurosurgeon from Olathe, Kan., outlasted 11 finalists May 26 to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee, taking home more than $40,000 in cash and prizes and, of course, the huge champion’s trophy.

My Trip to India

By Jeet P.

I went to India with my family on Nov. 23, 2008. We went to Rajasthan and we stayed in a tent in the desert. I got to ride on a camel and play in the desert sand dunes. The camels are well trained and are able to see in the dark.

image Next, we went to tour Mehrangarh fort in Jodhpur. Then, we went to Udaipur. In the middle of the lake, there is a palace. The king and his family still leave in a palace by the lake. We went to a crystal museum. One of the kings ordered the crystal furniture and died when it arrived. The next king thought the furniture was bad luck so he placed the furniture in the museum.

Chandni In Hawaii

By Chandni P. I went to the Big Island in Hawaii. This island has a live volcano. I learned the story of the state fish of Hawaii.

image A pig was close to a volcano when it erupted. The pig tried to run to the sea before the lava could kill it. The pig and the lava made it to the sea at the same time. The pig was transformed into a fish and survived the hot water. The fish was then named humuhumunukunukuapua.
