Overseas Indians facing visa problems can use OCI card

NEW DELHI: The ministry of overseas Indian affairs is encouraging people of Indian origin to opt for the overseas citizen of India, or OCI, card to deal with the long delays faced by Indian Americans in getting visas to travel to India.

The OCI card, which is a lifelong visa, is a solution to such delays for people of Indian origin, minister for overseas Indian affairs Vayalar Ravi told ET on the eve of the annual Pravasi Bharatiya Divas event in Delhi.

Indian-Americans complain of delay in visa issuance by embassy

"WASHINGTON: The Indian-American community has complained of "inordinate" delay by the Indian embassy in issuance of visas, claiming that it is mainly due to imposition of new rules and acute shortage of staff at various consulates.

The community, which staged peaceful protest demonstrations at various Indian consulates in the US -- Houston, San Francisco and Chicago -- earlier this month, now plans to raise this issue with top officials of Indian government during 'Pravasi Bharatiya Divas' in New Delhi next month."

American citizens can get Washington’s help for visa delays to India

The Indian diaspora in the United States can seek assistance from Washington to handle its growing frustration with what many allege to be corruption, red tape, and arbitrary rulings in dealing with visa applications for India.clearpxl

The U.S. State Department on Monday came out in support of American citizens of Indian origin who are facing considerable delays with recent visa applications for India. When told about the nearly 75,000 backlog of visa applications with accounts of American citizens resorting to hunger strikes after being harassed at Houston, Chicago, New York and San Francisco consulates, Mark Toner, the Acting State Department Spokesman told journalists, “Well, of course, on an issue like this, as you’ve mentioned, these are American citizens. They have clear avenues to communicate their frustrations or their concerns either through Congress or directly to the State Department.”
