Power of Shiva

Setting:
Chinmaya Mission’s 2nd Annual Function on May 2, 2010 at Vestavia Elementary school, Birmingham, AL

You can imagine the anxiety and tension back stage when a little Shiva could not perform on the stage at the last moment. This poem was written by the performer’s mom, Bipasha Samal about the play ‘Ganesha goes to a Party’ by the Madhuram students (Ages 4 and 5) where this episode took place. We have heard of Shiva’s tandava nrutya and anger,
His violent dance poses and the third eye which makes him look stronger.

On May 2, 2010 Shiva (Varsha) had a tired spell and then was created history,
How Rama (Nihal) took the avatar of Shiva is still a Mystery.

The happy family’s feet of Shiva, Parvati and Ganesh
Seen dangling and waving from below the stage curtain, desperate to bless.

The curtain opens with snow covered Kailash and a beautiful setting,
Lady like Parvati’s (Diya’s) legs and natkhat Ganesh’s (Pranav’s) trunk constantly moving,

In confusion or excitement, we are not sure till now,
Cute pretty Shiva had turned into the tall handsome, how?

Mount Kailash echoed ever smiling Narada’s (Annikah’s) voice,
Once loud and next time louder followed by Narayana twice.

Kubera (Nishant) kept the people laughing with his comedy,
His extravagance, confidence and with all the food at the Party.

Divine ‘Lakshmi’ (Anika) and ‘Saraswati’ (Sanya) had a grand entrance
With their blessing and presence they enchanted the audience.

In the backstage the teachers (Sandya and Sakthi) and mums of the players,
Did a great job of directing, prompting and putting the pieces of the play together.

Oh we forgot about our silent Chiraag, the obliging helper,
Happiest when the part calls for ‘no talking’ for which normally there will be no taker.

Thanks to Sandya and Sakthi for their time and effort throughout the year,
The kids know more about our culture and can recite difficult slokas without fear.
